MELANCHOLY

"Find words for your sadness, and you will love it."

                                                                                Oscar Wilde

One sad winter evening I sat down at the piano and began to play those melodies that corresponded to my mood. It was very different music, and in choosing it, I listened only to my own feelings: I obediently went where they led me... After playing it for a few hours I felt a sense of relief: everything no longer seemed so sad and despairing... I realized that we all consciously or unconsciously make use of the healing power of music. The most beautiful and beloved melodies are imbued with a state of melancholy, from light sadness to real grief, from romantic longing for the object of passion to philosophical reflection of life. This is what unites listeners of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" or Chopin's Nocturne with fans of Sting's ballads or Billie Eilish’s sad songs.

“Melancholy" is an album of my favorite music, reflecting my personal experiences - the longing for the past and the joy of meeting the new.

BACH - BIRTHDAY

A monologue about the Greatness of the Universe.

Reflection on the Sacrament of Life.

Feeling of free flight beyond time and space. On the one hand, the peacefulness of a baby in the womb, on the other hand, the calmness of a sage, who is aware of the imperfection of the world.

The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I: Prelude and Fugue in E-flat Minor

MOZART - CHILDHOOD

The Inner Child continues to live in us when we grow up. He is ready to create and open to everything new...

He does not care how he looks in the eyes of others. He's not afraid to make mistakes or be misunderstood. He just does not know what it is. He knows how to enjoy simple things. His imagination easily transports him to magical worlds.

I wanted to find music that reflected the purity of a child's perception from an adult's perspective. Almost without thinking, I chose Mozart.

Piano Sonata No.12 in F Major, K.332/300k: II. Adagio
00:00 / 04:52

SIBELIUS - YOUTH

The waltz is a symbol of first coming out. An invitation to life. The waltz breaks away from the usual childlike sense of permanence, of the stability of life. Unhurriedly at first, on a quiet "one-two-three" from the opened doors to the center of the huge hall, and faster and faster, until the rapid whirlpool of the city, its hurrying streets, merry-go-round squares, rumbling train stations picks up and carries away into a new unfamiliar, seductive and disturbing world.

2 Pieces from Kuolema, Op.44: 1. Valse Triste
00:00 / 05:13

RACHMANINOV - FIRST DISAPPOINTMENT

The bitterness of loss. Sadness, but not yet tragedy.

Lonely cries of seagulls hang in the air... echoing in the lower register. Sea lives its own life, the waves grow wider and weaker, dictating the general motion. Somewhere the sea becomes more stormy, carrying along and drowning out bird's voices.

When the sea calms, the cries of the seagulls are even more piercingly... lonely.

Etudes-tableaux, Op.39: 2. Lento assai
00:00 / 05:59

BEETHOVEN - CONFUSION

Despair on one side, protest on the other. The restlessness of a rushing soul. The uninterrupted motion, through which exclamations of complaint break out. But the unrestrained forward impulse and fierce unwillingness to be reconciled are stronger than self-pity.

Piano Sonata No.23, Op.57 "Appassionata": 3. Allegro ma non troppo
00:00 / 05:20

DRUCH - THE TERROR AND HOPELESSNESS

A plunge into the depths of the unconscious. A feeling of darkness coming from the very depths of the soul at the moment of the complete collapse of any illusions. Gradually the blackness begins to dissipate. A cold and light sensation of enlightenment emerges.

Sonata № 2 with Recording “To My Mother’s Memory”
00:00 / 06:39

DEBUSSY - EXISTENTIAL VACUUM

Winter... Emptiness... Even a certain sterility of space...

Loss of reference points... Cautious movements in the realm of permafrost...

Footsteps in the snow - just a hint of the presence of a living soul…

Préludes, Premier Livre, CD 125: 6. Des pas sur la neige
00:00 / 04:37

WAGNER - TRANSITION, TRANSFORMATION

The past is hard to let go of. Any global change is perceived as metaphorical death. But the end of one is always the beginning of another.

The climax of the piece is the peak of the transition to a new state.

This is not easy to reach, and so there is a sense of endless ascent in the music. Higher and higher, higher and higher... There is no sadness here; there is rather an expectation, a longing. On the one hand we are striving towards the peak, while on the other we are unable to reach it....

Finally, the climax is reached. Infinite pleasure and incredible relief are felt. After the détente, there is a gradual calming…

Tristan und Isolde, WWV 90: Isolda's Love-Death
00:00 / 07:02

LISZT - PEACE

"Trusting the flow of the waves"...

The gentle swaying...

The kind of calm that comes after a storm.

A feeling of peace and quiet happiness...

Consolations, 1st version, S.171b: 3. Lento, quasi recitativo
00:00 / 07:12
